Backwards Compatibility?

Or not. Or yes? Wait, recompile? Oh, crud. That means:

  1. Buy new versions for the Xbox 360
  2. Download new verions from Xbox Live
  3. Send in our old versions to Microsoft so they can ship back the new versions

Yuck. None of that sounds appealing, nor inexpensive!

UPDATE: Whew. False alarm. Move along, move along.

So, does this make you less likely to buy the Xbox 360? Honestly, I would like to know what games you plan on playing on the new system. As I understnad it, the top sellers will be backwards compatible, so what crappy game you still pining to play once the next gen consoles come out? Sure, NightCaster had its moment, but it was too brief because it sucked.

Maybe Nin. Rev. is more your style, as I have heard all Nintendo games will be available for it.

Waiting for your comment on the ign report. PS3 hype may be toppeling quicker than they had hoped.

I see your recent update. It only confirms what I had originally posted: at least backwards compatible with the top sellers. So probably all of the “platinum hits” along with a few others. Which is fine. But just as an example; I have not played Halo 1 since Halo 2 came out. Backwards compatiblity was not a trump card with me. Matter-of-factly, I plan to get rid of my Xbox this year (now if I can only get my credit card number off of it, otherwise, I’ll make piece metal out of it with my AK).

I read a recent report about how the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are considered “out-of-line” with true gaming principles, which is why the Nintendo Revolution is going to stay strictly a gaming console, with bonus DVD hardware, but nothing else (aside from online play). Any comments on the plans of M$ and Sony ot takeover the media center of families? Good, bad? On a side note, is Nintendo going to fall prey like it did to Sega because of this?

Really, the only thing I want to do will be Halo 2 - until Halo 3 comes out. :) As you said, next-gen games have a way of instantly and irrevecably obsolescing previous games.

Nintendo, much as I love it, is going the way of Sega. Development house, here we come. Microsoft and Sony have it right - we don’t want six units in our living rooms - we want one music, DVD, and game machine that ties all together in glory!

I love this, the fact that it will be backwards compatible if in fact that is the truth. It will now be much easier to take my financial aid money and buy a Xbox 360. My wife wasnt too keen on the idea of me having both Xbox and Xbox 360. If in fact it is backards compatible, goodbye Xbox hello Xbox 360. Of coarse, my big problem will be how to transef the estimated 300 songs from my Xbox to the Xbox 360.

MadMarc - good question - I read an article (although I don’t know where it is now) that discusses this very problem. I bet that there will be a utility that lets you transfer data via the hard wire. It might do it over 802.11g, but that’s half as fast as the wire. If I find that article again, I’ll post it to this article…
