Pirates? Huh, I haven't heard much at all, I'll search it out as I am a big fan of Sid Meiers stuff (Civ 1, 2, & 3).

I love the Elder Scrolls series on the fact that it isn't a hack and slash role player like Fable. In Fable there was no real stratedgy. You could pretty much attack at will who you wanted. In Elder Scrolls you have to pick your battles wisely and understand the reprecussions if there be any. I am looking forward to Oblivion. I want a role playing game that I can get lost in. None of this 20 hour junk. I want a game that can make me feel proud of my character. Like I am raising him as a child of my own.

You know, I don't feel like this is Fable all over again. The stuff I was hearing about Fable wasn't backed up by any previous work that they had done that I was impressed by. I was already not a fan of Lionhead Studios, and had low expectations. They were met; I sold Fable a month later on eBay.

In this case, the Elder Scrolls series is well established, and they have specifcally said that they are not changing their formula much - which I couldn't be happier about. I loved Morrowind - it defines what I want from an RPG. Role-playing for me is not trying to see if my relationship with some NPC could grow (what is this, The Sims?), but to see how my character would grow in relation to the core aspects of gameplay. Fable diverted the attention from the action, where it was strong at, to relationships, where it was very weak at.

Anyway, The Elder Scrolls does this well - build your character's abilities by doing what I love best - fighting monsters, exploring caves, looking for treasure. Woohoo! It's because they have a past example, and aren't changing (other than huge refinements in NPC smarts, graphics, and the fighting engine, etc. etc.), that I don't see this as another Fable: I look forward to this as the best RPG ever.

Well, I have had a chance to read the Oblivion article several times. I can't help but think: Fable hype all over again. First, I do feel that the Xbox 360 will be capable to doing everything that was mentioned in the article. Let's face it. It is better than any computer I have come across, and it is geared towards gaming. But whether the game developer actually goes through with it is my bigger concern. I don't play a lot of RGPs, I used to, but I have been seduced by FPS too much. Nevertheless, I bring this issue up because of the subsequent let-downs that I heard (from more places than our clan) that it simply did not live up to its hype. Which kinda sucks, as Fable had ample time to be a good game. It was supposed to be available in Spring of `02 (under tha name of "Project Ego"), then `03, etc.

Long gripe short: how much will be get in the end? Personafied bricks (per the article), or another over-hyped under-performance game. My investment awaits your reply.

Stupid authorization code erased my last missive. I swear it said "bjue" unless it was a backwards 'l'.

Anyway-- patience young Jedi, 5 months to go. Patrick Stewart, eh?
