Real Gaming Machines

I’ve been reading many articles over the last few days talking about the hardware capabilities and intentions of the new gaming consoles on the horizon. As I’ve read more and more, the touted abilities of the PS3 seem to be waning. Unbelievably, they just posted an interview where they say this: “We haven’t been creating our [past] PlayStations for the sake of games… The PS3 isn’t designed to lean towards games.” Holy cow - did I miss something?

My intention with this post is to collect all of the articles that talk about the Xbox360’s hardware, and the fight it’s going to have with Big N and Sony. Below, you’ll find links to these articles.

The PS3 isn’t a video game machine. Yegads - I heard the screaming of a million Sony fanboys, and then it was silenced. Check out the great posts in that Slashdot article - people aren’t pleased.

Inside the Xbox360.
Deep, techinical, long. IBM’s processor and supporting hardware laid bare. I needed every class of my CS degree (which I earn in 2.5 weeks, BTW) to get everything in here. A thing of beauty.

What OS is under the hood. Invesitgative journalism and speculation about the embedded Operating System running programs on the Xbox360.

Xbox360 Dashboard. Pix of the internal dashboard program. Make sure you click on the slideshow link to see the images!

Non-technical comparison of posted stats. A good read on who’s got more of what in the Xbox360 vs. PS3 arena.

Microsoft’s rebuttal to Sony’s PS3 specs. A fascinating article talking about why the PS3 is not what it E3 seems to have been saying about it. A must-read - even more interesting when compared with the “PS3 don’t do games” article above!

Well, that is quite an announcement, but I see their reasoning. The Xbox 360 is not only a gaming machine either. Supposedly, it is more focused on gaming, though (the jury is out until launch day).

Now I am really interested to see what things will be like 1 year from now. Xbox 360 gets the jump start, Sony makes this damaging announcemnet (IMO), and Nintendo is going for a… right, we’re not sure what their up to. But here’s my thinking: Xbox 360 has their game plan down, the machine is based on gaming, but has a lot of amenities that will cover other areas in our living room, such as the DVD player et al. Sony says the PS3 is not designed towards gaming, so then what? Blu-ray? Very risky business, especially if it does not catch on (and looking at America, I’m very skeptical). Then Nintendo says theirs is a gaming machine, with a bonuss DVD player. I was under the initial impression that Nintendo would die out, but if Sony is taking this direction, there’s new hope.

On a side note, I do not think Blu-ray is going to impact us like standard DVDs. Matter-of-factly, why do we need Blu-ray technology that can put 6 times as much data on a DVD? Which will cost more for the consumer in two ways: New Blu-ray DVD player and higher DVD costs (not to mention gas money, just kidding). But still, I see a more digital approach to the current DVD system: downloaded content to your TV. Like Pay-per-View, but instead you save if to your HDD (on comp., Xbox, or TV, if applicable). Anyway, the gist of it is, I think Sony is slowly turning the knife on themsleves. Hmph, back on topic-

All that E3 hype, now this? I just don’t get it. Gaming is a huge growing industry worth billions, why make that statement? If you were a gaming developer, would you want to hear that? Might as well force them at gun point to head on over to M$. Well, I’d better read the other articles. More later-

Good point. I bet the guy that said that is being roasted slowly by Sony. Sounds to me like Nintendo is going to do just fine.

I have had an opportunity to browse through the Xbox 360 dashboard. Succinctly put, I am over-impressed. It looks incredibly user friendly (which we all know is good for me), plus it has so many options. So, could I hook up my future camcorder to to my xbox 360 to see the footage I had previously recorded?
