I think what made me not bother waiting for the HD-DVD drive version (if it's coming at all) is the software: Oblivion will be on normal DVD, and whenever Halo 3 shows up, it will certainly be on a normal DVD, as they want the biggest audience they can get!

Congrats!!! What made you decide to order it now instead of waiting for the potential HD-Dvd version?

On that note, I often wonder if Blu-ray or HD-Dvd will ever be fully used, as I see things becoming more likely to be down-loaded from PC rather than bought and stored on a disc. Even still, I think it'll be a few more years before there is a necessity for Blu-ray/HD-dvd as the current dvd is cheaper and more readily available. We'll see how things turn out, though. But for a gaming console designed to be around til 2010-ish, I think standard Dvd will be fine.

I pre-ordered my Xbox 360 yesterday at the local GameCrazy! They were not yet accepting orders on peripherals, or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but were accepting pre-orders on other games. WOOHOO! :) When I mentioned that it was Oblivion that I was interested in, the worker was himself excited about the game - looks like it's going to have a good following!

Well, as I have already pre-ordered my Xbox 360, I do not think that I will be canceling my order for a couple of reasons. If you have been watching the tech news lately (and I get most of mine from engadget.com), it appears that 20th Century Fox has jumped onto the Blu-ray bandwagon with Sony's MGM. So Blu-ray has more backing than HD-Dvd at this point.

Another reason, as Sandstone so aptly pointed out, games are not using even half the space on a regular Dvd [Halo 2 used 3.5 gigs out of a potential 9 gigs available]. I am not sure how much ES:Oblivion is using, but probably not 9 gigs. Maybe by the end of the consoles' life we'll see the need for that kind of storage space. Even still, if I have to use 2 discs for a game, I am not going to fret over it.

At this point, seeing how HD-Dvd is not winning the war, I would be reluctant to wait for a HD-Dvd version of the Xbox 360. Also, how fast do you think we will be getting into this new dvd market? It took about 5 years for Dvds to become popular.

Say WHAT? Alright, first start with this story. Then, read this slashdot header, followed by the first dozen or so comments below it. Then panic. Then, read this comment.

So what am I supposed to do? Pre-order and get the less-technically advanced version? Is the higher-capacity HD-DVD drive going to ever be put to its fullest? Am I going to lose out on games because they only come on this format?!?

Now relax. This prediction of doom and gloom is not going to happen. No way would a publisher NOT put out a game on the older format. What I see is two version of the game: one that ships on multiple DVDs, and one that ships on a single HD-DVD. But wait: as this comment says, no game has ever filled up an entire DVD. Not even Oblivion is going to fill it up. If it's not going to, we're ok for this next generation. I hope.

Another very interesting link that may cause widespread fear and panic.

I called Game Crazy last night (752-0112) - I've had great success at this local store on Harrison and 4th. They said they are accepting pre-orders for the Xbox360, and for some games (the clerk mentioned Perfect Dark). However, they are not yet accepting pre-orders for peripherals or for all of the launch games, e.g. ES4: Oblivion. I'll probably still pre-order sometime this week, though... got the cash already set aside... :)

Every day that passes, I get more conflicted on what games I will buy. I already submitted this on other topic, nevertheless, adding to the rhapsody of the moment, my purchasing list is as follows:

The console (duh)
An extra controller, the VGA or better connection (Pref. DVI), 2-3 games which could be; ES:Oblivion, GR3, PDZero, Gears of War, and/or Ninty-nine Nights. Thereafter, the adaptor, another controller, maybe a new game...

Guess we'll see come launch day.

Well assuming that my wife will actually let me get the 360 when it's released....

I plan on getting pretty much the same stuff that Sandstone mentioned. Oblivion will definitely be my first 360 game. That game looks ready to revolutionize RPGs forever (Radiant AI is going to blow us away).

If I have the money for it then Ghost Recon 3 will definitely be on my list too. Gotta have my Tom Clancy fix. :)
