Ubisoft loses a customer

Oh, the pain. Ubisoft, what have you done? I downloaded the new Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory maps onto my Xbox 360, and the download causes the game to no longer boot. Seriously, the game crashes on load. I REPEAT, THE NEW CONTENT BREAKS THE GAME.

HELLO, QUALITY CONTROL? I’D LIKE TO REPORT A CASE OF

DID YOU DO ANY TESTING

AT ALL?!

I mean, I never beat the game originally - I was hoping to beat the game this time through. I had just made it to the fourth level. Now, I’m going to have to delete all of my save games. Worse, I no longer have faith in this company. Time to vote with my wallet… Double Agent? Yeah, right.

Oh yeah: these guys released the maps five months ago, and they didn’t work then either. They were quickly pulled, and have just now been re-released. Uh, did they do no testing at all in those five months?

Other CT problems I’ve noticed:

  • The picture that displays in the upper left-hand corner of the screen when you’re picking a game to load is static: it’s like they’re not loading the graphic correctly. This picture is supposed to be the screen image where you saved. It turns out it’s pretty important in deciding which save was which.
  • The time used to name the game when you save is fast by six hours. It’s so weird - you have to see it to believe it. It’s like the game is saying, “Xbox 360? Give me the time of day so I can store it. Now, lessee… add six hours…”
  • The intro movie pauses for a fraction of a second about every four seconds. Pretty distracting.

Argh. :(

Ow. Tough break my friend, tough break.

Interesting, however, because I haven’t experienced any of these problems on my old school Xbox. Not that I don’t have gripes about Chaos Theory (believe me, I do). I just haven’t seen any of the problems you describe.

1. The downloadable content I can’t comment on. Never tried to download anything for CT. If I ever do, I’ll let you know how it goes.

2. The screenshots of a game in the save/load section are not static on the Xbox. I have never had any complaints with that feature. They are perfect screenshots of what I am looking at, the exact moment I save the game–very helpful. This (like pretty much everything else you list) sounds like a hiccup in the Xbox to Xbox 360 conversion.

3. Again, this addition of 6 hours issue is not a problem for me. The correct time is displayed when I save a game.

4. The intro movie doesn’t skip every few seconds on the Xbox but I do hate the “feature” that you can’t friggin’ skip the first minute of the intro movie. Very, very, very annoying and a seemingly juvenile mistake.

5. I do have an audio issue with CT but it’s not in the intro movie, its in the game itself. You can usually tell when something significant is about to happen because the audio will just completely cut out for a split second before tense music starts, somebody spots you, etc. It would be really nice if this didn’t happen at such crucial moments in the game–ruins the gameplay and suspense.

I would probably be taking your position if the same thing happened to me. But I also don’t think that Ubisoft has committed a completely unpardonable sin here (except for maybe the extra maps problem–that’s just rediculous). Almost everything you described is because of the conversion to the 360. The game was originally designed for the Xbox and we all knew (well at least I had an inkling) that things such as this were bound to happen. Sorry man.

Uh… yes, this problem is restricted to the 360 - it doesn’t affect the XBox. ;) Thing is, it happens to nearly everyone’s 360. Read the Ubisoft, Gamefaq, or even Penny Arcade forums for more (vitriolic and ad hominem) testimonials.

I do not think it’s wrong to ask that a game that has been marked as officially backwards compatible actually work. Sure, if it hadn’t have been marked that way, I couldn’t complain. But it was, and it is supposed to work. Shouldn’t it be taken off the list? This is incompetent Quality Assurance at its worst.

Heh - actually, I don’t understand your last paragraph - you’re saying not to blame Ubisoft? Could you run through that logic for me again? ;) Of course this has happened because of the conversion to 360 - here’s the magic rule, though: release functional software. What’s wrong with wanting that out of a company?

I feel your pain as well. It is the emulator for the backwards compatibility on the 360 that has caused this problem. I have been reading numerous articles about how bad the backwards compatibility is.

Over at ign.com, they tested every game that is backwards compatible and quite a few have a lot of problems. Most notably Splinter Cell, Ninja Gaiden Black, Fable: the lost chapters, Half Life 2, Jade Empire, etc. The problems are what you said were happening with your game. Besides crashing, there have also been big problems with framerates, graphics, and controls. A lot of the games graphics are worse looking than they were on the original Xbox.

Before you go against Ubisoft maybe they aren’t the problem, maybe it is Bill Gates and his cronies at M$ not being dedicated enough to the backwards compatibility feature. I have downloaded before and havent had a problem with Splinter Cell. When I get a 360 I will definitely be keeping my Xbox as well. Hopefully by then they will have redone the patches for the backwards compatibility emulator, And yes I will be buying and playing Double Agent.

I really do not care much about backwards compatibility, though I did keep SP:CT around as well as Halo 2 — all my other dozen games were given away as belated XMas presents (yes, I am that cheap!). I agree that SP:CT is a pretty cool game, and I will probably buy the next installment just based on the character and gameplay. Sure, it has it’s bugs and issues, but overall, it is still an impressive title.

I’m not going to lash out at Ubisoft or Bill Gates (perhaps more appropriately, J Allard). Backwards compatibility is marginally important, and only for the first few months of a new consoles life if you buy it on launch day. Considering how much time I put into gaming these days, I find the issue even less worthwhile. Though I can side with Stonesand in that Ubisoft should have been more aware of these problems prior to releasing the new buggy maps. Now they need to release a patch for the new content. Great, take up more space on the ol’ 13 gig hard drive.
